What 'polar night' actually means in Tromso
Tromso's polar night — the sun staying below the horizon all day — runs technically from about 26 November to 15 January. Because the city sits below a ring of mountains, the sun is actually out of sight for longer than that from the ground: roughly 21 November to 21 January. Either way, dinner at the camp starts at 19:00, well inside the dark hours for the whole core season regardless of which definition you use. At the other end of the year, Tromso gets a mirror-image midnight sun through the summer, which is the reason the camp itself only exists as a winter product — there's no darkness at all to sell an evening dinner into once summer arrives.
Why darkness alone doesn't decide the aurora
A dark sky is necessary for seeing the northern lights, but it isn't sufficient — you also need it to be clear, and you need actual geomagnetic activity on the night. December's unbroken darkness gives you the longest window to get lucky in, but it doesn't raise the odds of activity happening in the first place; that's driven by the sun, not the calendar. Cloud cover is the other half of the equation, and it's entirely independent of how dark or light the sky technically is — a clear November evening can outperform an overcast December one.
Why March gets a mention of its own
Around the March equinox, Earth's magnetic field lines up with the solar wind in a way that's been measured to statistically increase geomagnetic activity — a real, documented seasonal pattern known as the Russell-McPherron effect, rather than a superstition. It doesn't guarantee a display on any given March night, but it's one of the more reliable stretches in the whole season for aurora odds, even with shorter, lighter evenings than December's. The same effect repeats around the September equinox each year, though that falls outside this camp's winter season.
The month-by-month shape of a 19:00 dinner
November opens the season with the light draining fast as the month goes on, moving from a still-partly-lit early evening to full dark by the back half of the month. December and January sit inside the deepest, most reliably dark stretch, with no meaningful daylight at all on the darkest days. February keeps the same dark evenings even as daylight stretches out noticeably at midday — the extra light lands around lunchtime, not at 19:00. March adds the equinox aurora bump on top of evenings that are still dark, if visibly shorter than midwinter's. April is the outlier — by dinner time the sky is noticeably lighter, which is the practical reason the season, and the sledding with it, wraps up around the first week of the month.
What the camp guarantees regardless
None of this changes what's actually booked. The herd, the sled if the snow allows it, and bidos over the fire happen on schedule in any month of the season, aurora or not. Treat a sighting as a genuine bonus rather than the reason for going — the nights it doesn't show are still the same evening, with the same feeding, the same short sled ride and the same dinner around the fire that the booking is actually for. If a clear, active night does line up with your visit, it happens on top of an evening that was already worth the trip — which is a more comfortable way to hold the odds than pinning the whole evening's success on a sky nobody can promise in advance, in Tromso or anywhere else this far north.
